Ypres, 11 November, Armistice During the First World War an estimated 500,000 people died in Ypres and its environs. The Commonwealth Memorial at the Menin Gate in Ypres records the names of 56,000 men from Great Britain and its Empire who were killed in Ypres Salient and who have no known grave. Every year many war veterans come together in Ypres to remember their family and friends who fell 'In Flanders Fields'. Still now, every evening at 8 o'clock the road which passes under the Memorial is closed and three buglers from the local fire brigade play the Last Post to pay a tribute to these men. |
